Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is a revolutionary approach to education focused on equipping learners with practical skills and competencies rather than just academic knowledge. This curriculum aims to help learners develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for the future workforce.

CBC Education Structure: 2-6-3-3-3 System

Pre-Primary (PP1-PP2)

2 years of early learning focused on foundational competencies in literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional development. Children develop through play-based learning, exploration, and interaction while building physical, emotional, and intellectual skills.

Primary Education (Grades 1-6)

6 years of core competency development in literacy, numeracy, science, and social studies. The curriculum integrates subjects to promote holistic development with emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application of knowledge.

Junior School (Grades 7-9)

3 years of skill deepening where learners explore specialized subjects across sciences, humanities, and technical fields. Focus on communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and digital literacy for secondary-level competencies.

Senior School (Grades 10-12)

3 years of specialization and mastery where learners deepen knowledge in chosen pathways. Emphasis on advanced competencies including critical thinking, leadership, entrepreneurship, and preparation for university or technical vocational training.

Seven Core Competencies

The CBC emphasizes seven core competencies that learners develop across all levels. These competencies prepare students for modern challenges and real-world success:

Communication & Collaboration

Express ideas effectively and work well with others across all grade levels.

Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving

Analyze information and develop solutions to complex real-world problems.

Creativity & Imagination

Develop innovative ideas and express them through various forms.

Citizenship

Develop responsible attitudes and contribute positively to society.

Digital Literacy

Use technology effectively and responsibly in learning and work.

Learning to Learn

Develop self-directed learning skills and adapt to new challenges.

Self-Efficacy

Build confidence, resilience, and belief in personal ability to succeed.

These competencies are integrated across all subjects and activities, ensuring learners develop well-rounded skills applicable to real-world scenarios.

The Future of CBC

The future of the Competency-Based Curriculum is bright, as it prepares students for a rapidly changing world. As industries and technology evolve, CBC ensures that learners are well-equipped to tackle future challenges. However, its successful implementation requires adequate resources, teacher training, and continuous evaluation to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Looking forward, CBC aims to promote lifelong learning, increase employability, and prepare students for entrepreneurship. The curriculum also aims to bridge gaps in access to quality education, ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the skills they need to succeed.
